1. What is the community that you will make your documentary?

The community that this documentary will focus on is the Christian community of Lifespring Church of Christ.

2. Why do you think it is a community?

It is a community because

  • There is a common supplication for Gods mercy and grace
  • Based upon proximity of habitation
  • Persist during separation from locality with support of well defined habits of reunion and sacred customs
  • Its a reality , a kinship , invested with all sentiment attached to kinship.
  • There exists a similitude

One can simply feel the self-less love and understanding of members.

3. What theory about community have you read that is relevant to issues in this community? Summarize the relevant ideas.

Tonnies  theory speaks of communities flourishing in the rural context. I should say true and false. Communities do flourish in the urban context and this church community is one such example.

Delantys’ writing has a fundamental principle which is revealed in this community. The breaking away from the Traditional Church – the Protestant view of modernity. This community displays deviance in 2 forms.

  • In Relation To The Society : Views the ways and goals of the world as meaningless
  • In Relation To The Traditional Church:The believer departs from the rigid and traditional Church which is unable to foster a sense of belonging in him.The believer breaks away and enters a community where spiritualism and the right doctrine is followed.

From Kim Harris’ article I can infer that new media is a vehicle for connectivity among people sharing commonalities which is applicable in this community.

The church has a fundamental principle of meeting together termed as “fellowship“.

The Bible is made up of many books and one such book called as Acts, Chapter 2 , Verse42-47 says

” They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

Face to face interaction is a must.

The issue faced is deviance in a relativistic context taking up a Micro Relativistic approach. The relativistic definition is that “Deviance refers to behavior or persons that are defined as deviant by social audiences“.

  • Labeling Theory put forward by Howard S.Becker states that “Deviance is not a quality of the act the person commits, but rather a consequence of the application by others of rules and sanctions to an “offender.” The deviant is one to whom that label has successfully been applied; deviant behavior is behavior that people so label.”Here the documentary will explore if the members of this community have been labeled anytime. What is their perception and feeling towards labeling.
  • The concept of positive deviance struck me as the binding factor. Positive deviance was never in vogue.Deviance was all about negativity. Transcending the narrow conceptualization of deviance Spreitzer and Sonenshein ‘s conceptualization of positive deviance, the positive extreme of the curve, caught my interest.

“Deviant behavior is intentional , with a purpose in mind.”
“Involves a significant departure from norms .”

Positive Deviance begins by enabling people to change their practice, which then changes their attitude, and ultimately internalization of  new knowledge. The documentary will explore if members of the community perceive and feel about  positive deviance and stigmatization.

4. Are you in agreement or disagreement with these ideas?

I am in agreement with the ideas although I am curious to explore the perceptions of members of the Church.

5. How can you use these ideas in your documentary?

In my documentary I will explore the following in the context of stigmatization and positive deviance.

  • The perceptions of believers
  • Response to deviance  –  How do they feel about it?
  • Do they practise positive deviance or not?
  • If so to what extent?
  • As a result have they been labeled in the external world?
  • Was the stigmatization prolonged or short-termed?

There will not be any defamation or slander.

26. Any other legal issues?

None considering most of it will be my work.

27. What are the most likely things that could go wrong with your project?

  • Deviance may not exist at all. It is my assumption. I do have another group of theories in relation to deviance which I will put together in my documentary.

28. What is your backup plan if these things occur?

I am booking the equipment this Friday April 9th and will book it for the following weekend.

34. How do these dates work in with assessment deadlines from other courses?

It is going to be a challenge that I intend to master as soon as possible. Extensive planning is required.

35. If you are using talent, does their availability suit your production schedule?

Since most of the interviewees will be available every Sunday in church getting hold of them will not be a trouble.

36. Remember to collect all the credit information as you go.

I intend to document and blog at every stage.
